Canada's new ETA system and Air Canada's dual-citizen passengers

Canada's New ETA is a potential nightmare for dual-citizens travelling with Air Canada.

The new ETA system being implemented by the Canadian Government early in 2016 has huge negative implications for Canadian Citizens who are also dual-citizens of visa-waiver countries booking and travelling with Air Canada.

Currently Canadian dual citizens will use their "other" passport when making reservations because of various advantages which they may offer. For example, British and Irish passport holders use priority EU lines at European airports and British lines at some UK airports.

Travelling to some countries where Canadian passports are subject to visa requirements or other charges, such as the Colombian "reciprocity fee" allows citizens of some EU Visa-Waiver countries to avoid these charges.

The Air Canada booking engine reservation system only allows for one passport to be entered for each passenger, whether the travel is one-way or return.

The problem here is that Air Canada uses the passport information entered as an APIS source to inform flight destination countries of passengers being carried, which in effect could result in a denied boarding situation.

We usually use our British Passports when making Air Canada reservations for trips outside Canada to Europe or the Far East and provide our Canadian Passports when checking-in for our return flights to Canada and upon arrival in Canada..

Ideally the Air Canada booking engine would allow passengers to enter their applicable passport details for outbound and return flights.

Details of Canada's new ETA system seem extremely hard to come-by at this time.
