The 777-300ER is a direct, albeit older generation, competitor with the A350-1000. I think it's most interesting that United is wiling to introduce a new type into its fleet when its replacement goes into service in 2 years. I would not be surprised to see the A350-1000 deliveries delayed in exchange for cheaper 777s.
Keep in mind United's 77Ws will be delivered with the new Performance Improvement Package (PIP). The PIP will allow them to pack in more seats and reduce fuel burn by another 2%. This will enable the 77W to have longer range than the expected A350-1000. EWR-HKG won't have to be so weight restricted as before should the 77W be put on this route, very likely in my opinion.
