The only time this has remotely been a problem for me was one time on (I think it was) a 777, when the tube was slightly too long to fit in the bin. For that time, I asked an FA nicely, and they put it in the closet and she obliged. Every other time I've taken a poster, that hasn't been an issue.

My biggest problem has been leaving the darn thing at the security screening checkpoint...
