Also, if either leg is international you are asking for trouble. Either way, taking a chance at leaving your bags and that you'll be able to find them at 3am seems unwise to me.
I agree with this, but will point out that whenever we have a flight EU-US(i)-US(ii), with an overnight between the two US flights, we've claimed out luggage, then taken it to the 'connections' luggage recheck so that we don't have to take it to the hotel with us. (Surprisingly) this has never resulted in missed/late/lost bags.
