My most important expectation is that turn down be done after I have left for dinner. I find it ridiculous to return to my room in late afternoon and find it darkened for the night. Plus, it's pointless to do it before I've taken my bath or shower when dressing for dinner. If the room was done in the day when I was away, it doesn't need a second housekeeper to come through before I've even returned to the room myself. I feel the same way when I check in during the late afternoon and discover that the turn down service has already been done. This is an obvious cheap way for hotels to cut housekeeping costs while maintaining the pretentiousness of doing a useless turndown service that's even counterproductive and annoying.
Totally agree! Can't stand getting the knock on the door at 6pm when I'm about to take a shower. Sometimes the housekeeper is just standing there proffering water and you just know she's certain you'll say "no need for turndown tonight". But the hotel can tick the box since it was offered.
