Also, I was surprised that I was able to choose seats on the SK945 return (ARN-ORD), but not the outbound SK926 (IAD-CPH). Apparently, seats are released 22 hours before departure, but I won't be able to check in online with this itinerary, right? Is there another way to snag some seats before airport check-in? I'm traveling with a family of four, so it's important to get seats together.

Thanks!
Not all seats are available for free advance seat selection, you may have to pay. Or all seats are assigned as the plane is basically full. Call SK and see what they can do. At times the keep some rows in the back blocked to assign to families. If they have to assign you seats that they normally charge for, don't expect them to waive the fee.

Why is it unfair preferential treatment to try to make sure that families are seated together? Or is it fair to the passenger seated next to a 7 year old six rows from the nearest parent. It is kind of the Scandinavian fair, everybody needs to have the same opportunity to be miserable. I know as a traveller I prefer these things settled way before the gate, so gate staff and crew don't have to try to solve the situation sometimes leading to delays or chaotic boarding. And if someone then gets a benefit I don't, my Scandinavian soul is not hurt.
