Your seat assignment should be what you requested. However, if there is an equipment change on that flight, all bets are off. So, it's good to check your reservation every now and then before you fly.
If your airline uses Sabre or Amadeus, and you have an iPhone, you could try the free "MyFlights" app. It monitors your bookings in real time, and alerts you within a few minutes of changes being made, including seating changes, at least until the sector falls under airport control.
TripIt has a similar feature but it is something like 40 GBP per year (not much I guess but there is a free alternative).
