This is good advice. Unlimited no charge changes for UA 1K's on reward tickets is a very useful benefit. Departing FRA the OP will likely have to book a connection (LHR or IST) to secure premium cabin seats this far out.

You can always start looking at T-14 availability now to get some kind of gage on how LH releases premium award availability to JNB. Not an exact science but it will give you some data points. FRA-JNB in the winter months seems like it would be a high demand situation even if LH is flying their wide body A346/A380/B747 metal.
