Ok, your objective is to get to Japan. Someone has assumed your origin is JFK is this correct?
I have 100,000 miles to use
Can you confirm these are Avios points (presumably in a BA Executive Club account), or do you have miles in another loyalty scheme.
and my understanding is that I can somehow use Cathay Pacific to get there instead of BA?
Cathay are in the OneWorld alliance, so they are a BA partner, so yes you could use them.
Would be lovely if I could take two days in Hong Kong or London or Paris as a stopover, but that might be being greedy. Haha.
Hong Kong... perhaps.
If your start is JFK or somewhere in USA a lot cheaper in miles to head the other way.
Both websites seem to be abysmal at giving information on how to do this (and I promise I tried).
What miles do you have to spend, if they are Avios - and they are in a BAEC account, then it is BAs website you need to refer to.
Generally, redemptions are priced per sector. So you would take the number of Avios points required for flight one, and then add the number of points required for flight 2.
That applies to BA flights, and flights with a single BA partner, and flights involving both BA and a single partner.
There is one exception, which is flights with 2 one world partners (but not BA), these use a different table, based upon total distance of all flights.
Keep in mind JAL are a one world partner, so it would shorten the distance, and reduce cost, to use them. And you could for example make a 2 airline award using JAL + AA, etc.
