Are there any recent experiences with the transit in MLE? We are planning to do exactly the same thing as posted in the Lonely Planet forum (8,5h transit in MLE with Emirates on the way to CMB) and it would be more than annoying if we would not be allowed out of the terminal during the transit.

Unfortunately I can't change the flights any more. Before booking them I carefully checked the visa requirements, found out that no visa is required for up to 30 days and decided to book the flights with 8,5h transit in MLE to get the first impression of Male.
