That's possible but the OP mentioned on his return leg a GM was ahead of him on the upgrade list (he was 7/11 while the OP was 9/11). It's possible the GM was on a Y fare but the only way he'd be 7 in that scenario is if everyone ahead of him on the list was also on a Y fare and had higher status. That seems rather unlikely to me.
