European (and Japanese, for that matter) night trains are becoming a relic of another era, owing to the increased affordability and decreased time commitment of air travel. Not unlike US long distance trains, really.
"Trying the US rail system" is a bit like "trying the European rail system"... one's experience is likely to vary greatly depending on what type of train one boards.
