I just got off of UA894 (A319) from EWR to DEN. It was a bumpy ride most of the way, and I surprised and how quickly we descended from cruise. I pulled up Flight Aware and saw that we spent a couple minutes at over 5,000 fpm.

Any idea what could've caused this? It was pretty jarring. Was it just turbulence avoidance?
Late descent clearance from ATC? Request from ATC to expedite descent? On a profile descent and ATC asks to change speed to something different than what's loaded in the computer...
Could be a number of reasons...
