If you lose your baggage, the tags have your MPO number on them, so CX can trace them for you. However they are only useful for this purpose when flying CX.
Otherwise, they're really not very useful. I just stick then my suitcase for easier identification especially with a lot of suitcases being similar these days.
Some people put the tags on the checked luggage, but I do not. I guess I am still wary as the old tags could easily break. I usually put the tags from the check-in counter on my checked luggage (more reliable than the old MPC tags), and put the MPC tags on my carry-on.
Yes, sometimes gate agents see my MPC tags and pull me to the correct line. (I usually have all four tags - GR, SL, GO, DM - on my carry-on. So they may not necessarily see my correct status
