Sometimes the gate folks will see your tags and direct you to the correct line.

If you lose your baggage, the tags have your MPO number on them, so CX can trace them for you. However they are only useful for this purpose when flying CX.

Otherwise, they're really not very useful. I just stick then my suitcase for easier identification especially with a lot of suitcases being similar these days.
