I have difficulties tuning into all the comparative phylosophing that's currently going on. For me it's definitely some fairly decent benefits, and the possibility to keep them the rest of my life even if I would end up flying a lot less in the future. And I like and enjoy the following platinum benefits regularly over the gold ones (repeating myself here):
-Partner platinum card through American Express
-Free seat plus
-Most bonus miles
-Dedicated and very efficient platinum helpdesk
-Possibility to obtain lifetime status (I've made it virtually)

I'm quite happy with the whole thing as is. I don't want more bling and/or more "exclusiveness" for something that's harder to obtain.
