Ask the folks that fly daily from IAH-LOS on United or ATL-LOS on Delta and you may be surprised. Lagos (LOS) is the commercial hub for Nigeria and is the fastest growing city in Africa. As a US citizen you will need a visa which is easy to get. Yes, it can be a mess at times but it's a nice place to visit even if you are on a MR. Head to Ikoyi or Victoria Island (VI) and it might as well feel like staying in South Florida.
The Radisson Blu, Intercontinental Hotel in VI and 4Point Sheraton in Lekki (close to the beaches and Atlantic Ocean) are some of the best hotel properties in Africa.
All the chaos in Nigeria is to the North and Lagos is very peaceful.
