Yes but it isn't common. I did it last week on NRT-HKG. However when I did, they ended up recalcing the ticket and I owed $37 in taxes.
You have to ask a ticketing agent and it helps to be paid J or Emerald. My colleagues who have flown coach in the past reported they had troubles going standby when the cabin was still 7s across the board in Expert Flyer.
The keg is don't try at the gate. Do it at the ticket counter or the club.
