I don't know that it really matters to the original question, but there was a tight connection and it was a CRJ so I didn't want to worry about waiting for the bag. As it was I just got to the connection gate to board with Sky Priority.
He was not wrong. Gate check is not a pink tag.
A pink tag is a valet tag, planeside tag, or "gate claim bag" tag. The pink tag is labeled "gate claim bag."
A gate check is the white tag that is claimed at the final destination.
