This is so wrong!!! Agents have been reminded multiple times in 2015 through news bulletins to avoid this specific situation! Gate agents are reminded to keep Priority tags stocked at their gate and to add a yellow priority tag to all gate checked bags for GM/PM/DMs+companions and Premium cabin passengers.
You were supposed to get the priority tag. The Gate Agent failed to follow persistent training and reminders... It's never been taught that a bag only gets a priority tag if it prints priority. All your companions that check a bag on the same flights as you also get priority tags, even if they aren't in the same reservation.
