You're thinking of the rules for *G. People without that status, such as the OP, only get access at the gateway as explicitly stated in the rules.
While the *A rule says that UA has more lenient rules for access to UA clubs when flying on UA metal. You are supposed to have access throughout the journey, not only at the gateway.

That said, UA may have tweaked the language recently to only provide access at all airports EXCEPT the origin, which seems quite bizarre to me. I'm not at all sure what they're doing with that phrasing.
