I think when someone repeatedly cancels and re-books a ticket while only using the lounge access the ticket provides, it becomes fairly obvious.
The real question is why it took LH 36 visits to catch him, each of the tickets were probably cancelled from within the lounge, they should have caught on to that pattern much earlier.
