I have a friend who has a summer cabin near Fagernes, so I looked into driving from Bergen to Oslo. It turned out to cost the equivalent of several hundred dollars U.S. to rent an automatic for that distance and time frame, so the bus, at about US$95, was a more relaxing and economical way to make the trip, and quite interesting to see how people stopped in the middle of nowhere, got off with their backpacks, and headed off into the woods or mountains, even in pouring rain in one case.

There was a lunch stop with a cafeteria and a coffee shop about halfway between Bergen and Oslo.

You can see stav churches from the road, but the buses don't really cater to tourists and don't stop there unless you're willing to stay till the next run of the bus, which may not be till the next day.

My friends met me at another bus stop in the middle of nowhere and drove me to the cabin. When it came time to proceed to Oslo, they brought me to the same bus stop.
