I learned that jalar is more common in Mexico and was led to believe it was a locality issue with pure replacement, but an associate (I believe from Honduras) once told me that halar and jalar are both used, often times customarily (but not interchangeably) in certain phrases even when the word has the same basic meaning (e.g., pull) within the phrase.

So I guess if the planes were painted in different countries/localities or to regulations/standards in different countries/localities, that might explain it.
