The newest versions of the 777-300ER are making the LR redundant. At the time, the LR was the only plane that could do routes like YYZ-HKG or YZR-SYD YYZ-BOM etc.
Some say had a 777 not had an engine issue at test flight for SAA, the A340 would have died years earlier.

Isn't the 777-200LR to the 777-300ER what the 787-8 is to the 787-9? Or s the spec gap much wider with the 77L-77W?
