OP correctly interpreted the "rules" and MLL receptionist was wrong. The edict that the later-departing guest leave at the same time as the host is rather unenforceable and thus quite stupid. And there is no necessity to be on the same flight. From many posts on this thread, it is clear too many AC front line staff do not know the real rules for MLL access as well as what benefits accompany award tickets in premium classes. Maybe it's time to send around a reminder memo to staff about such matters?
No one reads memos.
As suggested in other threads with some AC staff not knowing the rules, keep a copy of the AC.com pages (PDF or link) on your mobile. Flash when necessary.
