There is a book called "Spent" that I found very interesting. At any rate, the reason people buy $10,000 watches is so that they will be admired. My guess is that the ads in Conde Nast weren't really to sell watches, but rather to educate a certain class of people about what watches are so expensive that their wearers deserve admiration.

Meanwhile, I view anyone who pays $10,000 for a watch as a fool. No ad is a magazine is going to make me feel any differently.
