The Villa, in Malibu, was the original museum and held Mr. Getty's original collection of antiquities, European paintings and decorative furnishings. After Mr. Getty's death, he left most of his vast fortune to the Getty Trust, which vastly expanded the collections and built the Getty Center to house most of the collection, the art conservation and educational faclities (the antiquities stayed in the Malibu villa).
Generally speaking, the two locations are NOT that far apart - the Center is adjacent to the 405 (San Diego Freeway) north of Sunset Boulevard, which affords easy access to the Pacific Coast Highway (California Route 1). Essentially, from Hollywood, you could take Sunset Boulevard directly to the Center - taking Sunset to its terminus places you (almost) at the entrance to the Villa.
So as Doc Savage states, it's really a question of what you want to see, art-wise and view-wise.
