Once you have the trip rescheduled (or need to book any other $8k ticket for yourself), perhaps he could book a joint reservation with you as the companion and apply the $8k ecredit to your ticket. After booking you should be able to split the PNR and then cancel his portion within 24 hours without fee so that he would not actually need to fly with you.
