Confront is sort of a strong word. I would tell them I've never been asked before and that their policy leaves wiggle room. In other words, they may ask or they may not ask. I take that wording to mean they are leaving the policy a bit open-ended to allow the gate agent some discretion. There is a big difference between a large group of people, say all adults, trying line up in one position out of order and a minor child boarding in their parent's position - a minor who can't board and fly by themselves but is too old to fit under the family boarding policy.
Perhaps complain is too strong a word, but I would open a case with customer relations asking them to clarify the policy and/or change it to address this particular situation and that, again, we've done this dozens of times before without being asked to board in the child's position. I'm not either incorrect or breaking the rules.
