Dollars are fine. Even the ATM at the Andaz will give you the option of taking out dollars or colones. Cash is important since many places (like nearby Witches' Rock) with give you a discount when using cash. For example, ziplining at Witches' Rock it was something like $75 charge, $65 cash.
Regarding car rental, I would consider what you are planning to do. If you plan an excursion every day, it would be worthwhile. If you plan just doing excursions 1/2 the time you are there, consider daily rentals from the hotel. The mandatory Costa Rica insurance double the cost of my rental and I am unlikely to rent the next time.
Thank you for this feedback and insight on the dollars. We saw the extortionate liability insurance charge. We will be traveling with our 6 month old - and while we plan to do almost no excursions at all (our first vacation with the baby - hoping for lazy relaxation!), we would like to have it to be able to go to the supermarket, a different restaurant or two, and the four seasons and prieta, etc. on our own time/terms without having to wait on a shuttle.
With that said - does anyone has has traveled here with children less than 2 have any "Pro Tips"? Should we bring a travel tent for the beach, or will the umbrellas suffice at Andaz/Prieta? Other tips?
