I was expecting it to expire in March 2016. This saves us $75 as we can cancel the card before the next AF and worry about getting her Gold status for her next stay that occurs after 4/1/2017.

If the Surpass now gives Gold status for over 2 years for $75 that's a great deal IMO.
The card expires 3/17, but the annual fee is for one year only. If you keep the card, you will be charged the AF again in March 2016.
