I am not sure if you cancel the credit card before Mar 2017 the status would still remain. The card may say the date but her status is really tied to the credit card. I believe with SPG, if your Gold status is from a card (AMEX Plat), the moment you X the card, the SPG Gold would be gone. However if your status is via spend on the AMEX SPG card, your Gold status would still be good thru the end of the year even after you cancel the credit card.
I am Gold through 3/2016 via a Surpass I cancelled in mid 2014.
We are going to cancel, if she loses Gold we will grab a Reserve ( and the 2 free nights) before the trip.

That's probably true with SPG. But I'm fairly sure that HH Gold goes thru March of the second year, regardless of the status of your card.
March of the 2nd year would be 2016 as she got the card in late 2014. Her card says she is Gold until March 2017.
I had the same thing happen to me on my Surpass as I opened the card in late 2013 and have Gold until March 2016 but I thought it was a mistake, maybe that's how it works.
I know going back a couple years Gold always expired the following March after one full year.
