new platinum member. have a round trip in april going fll-phl and then phl-mia return. I need to change the outgoing flight to pbi-phl and a different time.

On spirit, they cancel one leg of the trip if you call beforehand and still let you fly the return leg. It is cheaper for me to book another ticket for the new outbound flight than pay change fees.

I cannot cancel one leg and keep the return ahead of time with American? If I cannot, do I just cancel online and it removes $200 from the fare and I am left with some kind of balance in my account?
