For the other direction, there is an "up" escalator to the train platform at the Phaya Thai BTS station, so it's easier going from the airport into town for those with suitcases.
The up escalator for Siam bound trains is on the north side of the entrance. I believe the up escalator for Mo Chit bound trains requires entrance to the south.

Traffic at certain times could be one reason. Dishonest drivers and rigged meters another. When solo I almost always take the train.

Transferring to the subway is fine, as the subway has escalators and elevators in both up and down directions. However, the subway can be a mob scene - on the train as well as waiting to buy a token - during certain rush hours.
I have taken bags on BTS many times and have seen many others do the same, both Thai and foreigners.
As for the 'mob' scene at MRT ticket booths, just know there are 2 booths at every station and the lines tend to only be at one. If you don't have a prepaid pass the lines are easy to avoid.
