Give the hotel a call and explain that you are looking to extend by a day. It's amazing how many Revenue Managers can be very helpful if you are willing to pay the full rate. If you do they will have a good idea who they can move around or walk if needs be the second night. Some pre-upgrades may already have been done on the back office system that are subject to availability, if you are willing to pay cash they will just remove the upgrade from someone.
An upgrade is unlikely if it's the best room or one of the best and the property is almost full.

This is also a great course of action to take. I definitely would not want to rely on staying another day, you risk ending your stay on a potentially ugly note.
