There's no charge to sit together. There IS a fee for some "preferred" seats. Most/all window and aisle seats in the front half of the plane are preferred seats that cost to use.
If you book Basic Economy, then you can't even choose a seat assignment until you check-in 24 hours before departure.
Well maybe I don't book basic economy because I always can pick my seats once I book my flight that same day.
