But co-location is still just the first piece. If connecting travelers have to "enter China" just to connect, it's a non-starter for most people. Why not fly *A/OW with major hubs in NRT, ICN, HKG, SIN, etc. which all allow seamless international-to-international connections?
If DL wants to abandon NRT because it's far from the center of Tokyo and because of the weak Yen (both excuses they've publicly given), then they had better be working on shoring up the ATI/JV with KE, or at least smooth out the rough patches there so that they could shift connecting flights to ICN and have KE handle some of the intra-Asia flying they'd rather not do.
Additionally, while LAX-PVG is nice, and assuming it gets approved by the government, they need more service than just DTW/SEA/LAX-PVG. You'd have to start up JFK-PVG and likely ATL-PVG again. And possibly MSP-PVG, as well. The whole point of having a hub on the other end in Asia is that you have flights from your U.S. hubs to get people there with minimal connections and maximum efficiently.
MU already flies PVG-JFK (twice a day, I think).
