As long as your departure time is less than 24 hours from your departure time where you start, measured in HK time, they will check it through. Example, I checked in at BKK for a 5 p.m. flight with an overnight in HK and a departure from HK at 5:30 p.m. the next day. Since 5 p.m. BKK was 6 p.m. in HKG they checked the bag through.
I am not sure with Vancouver being 15 hours behind HKG how long your connection is but under 9 hours you should be good.
It is 24 hours local time - no need to calculate different time zones. And it is from arrival time to departure time.
If you arrive 2 pm and depart 1:30 am next day you can check the loggage thru (just as an example)
