Wonderful Stay Mar/Apr 2015

Just returned from a 7-night stay at the Westin Cancun Resort and Spa. I chose this property after reading the reviews. The property was an awesome value at 42,000 point for 7 nights. I used SNA's and was upgraded to a 1,200 Sq Ft Parlor Suite with Lagoon View (which i thought was very good and possibly more interesting than the ocean view.) We had an 8-year-old and a 5-year-old with us. They brought in a roll-away bed for us since the couch did not fold out.

Breakfast was included for Plats. You have the option of dining at the RBC lounge or at the Palmar restaurant. I would recommend the restaurant as the selection is much greater. There is an afternoon happy hour at the RBC lounge. We took full advantage the first 5-nights. On the 6th night we were told that they instituted an one-drink limit, but we were trying to cut back at this point anyhow. Not sure if this is going to be an on-going policy or just a Spring Break thing.

The property is a bit dated, but the service at this property is very good. The management knows how to run a resort and how to please guests. For example, I asked the manager whether they can bring out more donuts at breakfast for the ninos. She informed me that there was only one left, but they will make more and she will find me in the afternoon to give the kids more. I totally forgot about this discussion until someone brought four chocolate frosted donuts and two glasses of milk to the room in the afternoon. The follow through was impressive.

We always dine at least once at a high-end hotel (e.g. St. Regis, Ritz, Four Seasons, etc.) while on vacation. We found the service at the Westin Cancun to be superior to that of the Ritz Carlton (which actually was particularly bad for a Ritz.) We had dinner at the Sea and Stone restaurant last night. The food was delicious, and the prices were very good (especially given the strong dollar.)

Tip1: Skip the all-inclusive option if you are plat. Between the free breakfast (hours are ridiculous from 6:30-11:30) and evening snacks (5-7PM), you will likely skip a lot of lunches.
Tip2: Do visit the concierge. They will pitch you to go to a timeshare presentation at the Westin Lagunamar, but they will give you a 15% off coupon for dinner at any restaurant without any hardsell.
Tip3: The water temperature in the pools seem cold at first, but they are actually at the exact perfect temperature once you get past it. There are some jets in some of the pools, but these are not hot tubs. The temperature is exactly the same as the pools.
Tip4: The gym is super crowded in the morning, but virtually empty after lunch.
Tip5: The website lists $35 for using the kids club, but they don't really seem to be charging. The kids clubs was pretty quiet, but ok for dropping off kids for 1-2 hours for some alone time. There are iguanas all over the place, but they are not dangerous and our kids actually liked them.
