As a former Sears employee, I can tell you that the registers are not hardcoded to prevent GCs from purchasing GCs. In fact, the firmware for the register was made 1984. It's really gonna be up to the cashier personally. I'd suggest you try different departments. For example, the commission employees in the hard lines are gonna be much more eager to sell you whatever you want using whatever you want, than those in the soft lines who may be more strict.
I actually saw the message on the register. I don't remember the exact wording, but it was pretty clear that it said one cannot use credit cards to buy "third party credit cards". I quote that because I'm hoping this means that only VGC, MGC, and AGCs are affected and that I can still buy retailer gift cards.
I've used this same cashier many times in the past. She knew all along what I was doing and had no problem with it. Even she was surprised by this.
And it wasn't just this register either because my wife was at another register trying to do the same thing ($200 VGC and some items) and she was turned down too. My wife's cashier said that Retailer gift cards would not work either, but we did not try at that time because we were attracting too much attention already. We just grabbed our items and left asap.
I really don't understand the thought process. They're practically bankrupt. They should accept any sale they can get.
