The good thing is that we will only be taking backpacks as carry ons so it shouldn't slow us down.
How do I check load levels on flights? I never thought that was possible!
Flight is next month but I will report back

To get an idea of how open a flight is, go to the AA site. Click on
Plan Travel, then
View Available Seats, then put the flight you want to view in there. It will show you all the empty seats. It is not exact, some people will not have selected seats yet, but you will know if there are 2 seats are open or 50. Obviously, the more seats that are open, the more likely you can hop on that flight in case of a mis-connect.
Another thing to do is check the weather and flights the day of. If you are going to mis-connect because of delays before you take off, call AA. Sometimes they will rebook you before you even take off. (e.g. If the ORD route is full maybe there is availability via DFW.)
