The default metal "lanyard" has structural defect. It rips right out at the seam where the screw clasp is attached

Don't forget that a number of them do turn up on ebay, and at hefty prices. It wouldn't surprise me if quite a few of them are stolen behind the scenes.
I better dig out the one I found on the floor at TSA check point a few months back and make some money
