GO to IST!! Suffer the entry visa, I promise it's worth it. I took a family holiday there last winter and Istanbul was absolutely brilliant. On the urging of FTers, we stayed at the VERY reasonably priced Empress Zoe hotel right in the shadows of the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque.
