If you haven't already appreciated the richness that California offers you could put together quite a getaway by driving. Rent a car if you don't own one, and consider:

  • Drive south along the Central Coast, appreciating the magnificent views and stopping for some hikes or nature walks. Visit Sam Simeon, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Central Coast wine country, etc.
  • Drive north up the North Coast, appreciating the magnificent views with the redwoods. Visit Napa/Sonoma wine country while you're passing through.
  • Visit the Sierra Nevada: Tahoe, Yosemite, Kings Canyon/Sequoia, etc. Usually this time of year it's snowy at higher elevations but due to the extreme drought this year these areas are accessible early in the year.
  • Visit Death Valley and the Owens Valley: Mono Lake, Mt. Whitney Portal, Bristlecone Pine Forest, etc.
  • Visit the Cascades: Mt Lassen, Mt Shasta, on up into Oregon. Tons of stuff to do in Oregon, both on the coast and inland.
