Sometimes bags get lost. AA isn't unique in this.
The most unusual thing about this trip seems to be a few missing inexpensive toiletries.
Was this your first flight on AA?
The rest of the baggage issue was relatively minor except for being told their was no room on the flight for your bag. I assume the bins the FA could see were full, and they didn't check the back. I assume this happens a lot, because I have seen many people put their bags in the bins near the front and then take seats in the back. I have been tempted, when getting off the plane, to take the bag with me and move it to another overhead or to the jet bridge, or if someone in the front is unable to find space, I was thinking about offering to gate check it and then taking the claim back to the person who put the bag there.
I don't think this is a reason to go look for the greener grass on another domestic carrier.
