heard, it's 3rd hand at best and I'm not entirely sure how much I believe it. I suppose it happens from time to time, but I've never been asked for any ID by any official in Italy, other than when clearing passport control at FCO.
I like your suggestion. Be honest with them in your plans as they are when applying for the visa.
