BA doesn't really do standby, well it does under limited scenarios. You can perhaps persuade the BA super-computer to flirt with you a bit. There is some evidence here that Blues "on the up" towards Bronze get dangled a bit of operational upgrades, in order to get you hooked. It probably explains half the people here.
Interesting point. I am an infrequent, generally leisure traveller about to drop back to Blue and on each of my upcoming SH flights BA are trying to get me to pay for an upgrade. Trouble is none of them is remotely tempting as the seats will be the same as in the back of the bus so all I'm getting is very expensive lounge access.
