The Lonelyplanet forums are a good source of info (Somalia, Iraq, Yemen), as are trip reports from this forum from
hauteboy etc (Iran, Algeria, Afghanistan). For this trip the Virunga National Park had a list of recommended guides/companies which was very helpful:
