I think the question partially contains the answer.
In Western societies (and probably in most societies as well) life is the most treasured asset one can have and it is inconceivable to take your own life without being in some altered state of mind (mental or physical sickness, religious beliefs, etc) or have very compelling reason to do it. It is considered as an axiom - it does not need any proof.
Well... as soon one can state it is not the case, whole new situation will come into play...
